You will need to make sure that your puppy receives plenty of rest. Do Not
let him/her over exert them self for the first two weeks. Minimize their
activity level so that their blood sugar levels do not drop. Puppies are easily
stressed by excessive holding. You should limit holding the puppy to 15
minutes per hour unless he/she is sleeping in your lap. Exercise pens are a
great asset in the house for Maltese puppies. Make sure that the ex-pen is
surrounded with things and people that you want the puppy to get use to.
That way they do not feel lonely while in it.
This is the best set up for your new puppy.
What you will need:
Exercise Pen
                                Wee-Wee Pads
Small Blanket
A Soft Bed
                            Small Soft and Hard Toys
Food and Water Bowls with non skid sides.
Place the playpen in a highly visible area of your home. Leaving a television
playing softly when you leave will help the puppy not to feel so lonely. And
it also helps to relieve stress. On one end of the playpen, put the wee-wee
pad and on the other put the blanket, bed, food and water bowls, (don't forget
the toys).  The idea is to get the puppy to go potty on the wee-wee pad at the
other end of the playpen, away from his goodies. You can start crate training
the puppy when he/she gets a little older-they have a very small bladder. In
my opinion, crate training is Not an option with these little babies . You need
to wait until their bladders are larger. Puppies feel alone closed off in a crate.
Hypoglycemia
Otherwise known as low blood sugar, Hypoglycemia can occur without
warning. When a puppy goes into a new home, misses a meal, doesn't eat full
meals, becomes overtired or exhausted from too much handling or playing
hypoglycemia can occur. The signs to look for are: depression, weakness,
being wobbly or jerky(the head appears tilted to the side, the neck appears
stiff and in a locked position the teeth may be clamped together tightly), This
can cause seizures, or coma, which can result in death.
The puppy's blood levels of glucose must be restored immediately!
Do Not Hesitate!!!
Rub some honey or karo syrup into its mouth. Do not pour excessive
amounts into the mouth as he may choke. The puppy should begin to
improve within 10 minutes. Then go to your veterinarian. If he doesn't
improve or he is unconscious, take the puppy to a veterinarian immediately.
Do Not Hesitate!  Your veterinarian may have to administer a dextrose
solution interveniousely in order to save the puppy's life. Either way, you will
need to contact your veterinarian to determine the problem. When choosing
your veterinarian, make sure that he has the proper equipment to handle a
problem such as this.
Initial vaccinations will not guarantee that your puppy will be  immune from
diseases. The entire series of vaccinations must be completed in order to
protect your puppy. During this time, it is a good idea to keep your puppy
from public places, such as pet stores, parks, etc.
